The Dark Side of the Light Chasers

“Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light;
I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.”
-The Old Astronomer to His Pupil (Sarah Williams)

I am a soul traveler, journeying through consciousness in search of the truth. I used to be a light chaser, heading wherever my soul’s light guided me. Enchanted by the beautiful promise of awakening, I kept my eyes only on the light and refused to acknowledge the darkness. I swung between Eastern, Western and new-age spirituality, enthralled by the sublime ideals that were promised.

Alas, the reality was far from a utopia. I fell victim to the cognitive dissonance I experienced and began to declare that the problems of the world were illusionary. I longed to transcend the pain and suffering in the world. After months of searching, I began to realize that my newfound spirituality was merely spiritual bypassing – a form of escapism and a defense mechanism I developed to help me cope with the darkness I could not accept.

While I believe that the ultimate nature of reality lies in non-duality, the human experience is created for the purpose of allowing us to understand and embrace duality. Without first understanding our darkness, we can never claim to be close to the light. Psychology is one of the ways of understanding the darkness of the human psyche, through modalities such as shadow work and various methods of psychotherapy. Once we reveal the darkest parts of the human psyche, we begin to see that what was once darkness to us was in fact light. All the archetypes of human behavior – both light and dark – lie dormant within each of us. There is nothing within us that is too dark to be shown to the world.

We are both human and divine. Without embracing our humanity in both its darkness and light, we can never understand our spirituality. Spirituality offers a framework for us to understand how we are connected and helps us to see past our egos. It draws us towards principles and causes that are larger than ourselves. However, it is equally important to fully understand and develop the human psyche. Spirituality without humanity is emptiness; truth can only be understood through the contrast of darkness and light.

  1. Thank you for the like. Instead of duality can the darkness be seen as the absence of light?

    1. Darkness is absence of light only, spiritual darkness too. Non duality means taking both as one like light dimmer.

  2. I sometimes find that I am having a love affair with my own darkness. Oftentimes to my own detriment! Finding balance seems to be a common theme in my life.

  3. Interesting thoughts. As a journalist and a Christian, I’ve sure seen “sunshine” clear out pretty much every kind of dark the world can throw out there. 🙂

  4. Thank you for writing this. It gave me greater perspective on accepting my own duality. There is a dark side that I see as negative, but in it also lies great strength. Well written!

  5. I just loved your last 2 sentences: “Spirituality without humanity is emptiness; truth can only be understood through the contrast of darkness and light.” Most bible students miss the fact that God included a lot of ‘opposites’ in creation. This includes how he wanted us to understand His unconditional love. God says through Ephesians (written by Paul) that we should embrace ‘unity’ and not discord. God even says that this truth is a mystery to most people. So, you are right on when you say that truth can only be understood through contrasts. I really like that… ‘We are both human and divine’. I finally understand what that means from listening to Neville Goddard lectures lately.

  9. Thank you for this eloquent take on our human and spiritual duality. I too often find myself buffeted in the battles of light workers and shadow walkers, each vying for the supremacy of their path, seemingly unable to comprehend that one cannot see their own reflection without having it mirrored back to them—cannot see their light or their dark without the contract of the other.
So grateful that you liked my post; it led me to your blog which I am now following.

  11. Thanks for your interest in my blog; it looks like we’re grappling with some of the same realities. This jumps out at me: “the ultimate nature of reality lies in non-duality, . . . Without first understanding our darkness, we can never claim to be close to the light.” I’d paraphrase it in more traditional words: If we don’t confront our sinfulness, we run the risk of rejecting God’s mercy. You make great good sense.

  12. When I realised that everything in my reality was a reflection, it was easy to see my shadows, accept them and let them go… I believe that we have come in for the contrast each human offers the other, we can witness without judging or criticising… everyone is just doing, what they’re doing based on their programming… all perfect!

  13. Thanks for liking my post. Still getting a hang of this blog thing so not sure how to “like” others’ posts. Really enjoyed “The Dark Side of the Light Chasers”! I agree that we need to be gentle with ourselves, and let our dark sides be seen by the world in order to get ahold of the truth of who we are. We are all struggling to be our best selves. Some maybe more than others… Me especially:)

  16. Ideas are not Truth. Yes, we are both human and divine. But more so divine being human. What is prior to ideas and prior to being human is Us – the Oneness, the Everything, and the Nothing.

    1. Exactly! This is beginning that we feel oneness. Divinity is not far for you. Indian Mystic Mahavir said that first step is most difficult. Rest is just repetition.

  22. Thanks for sharing your journey. I’ve been seeking to understand life on planet earth, for a long time (sixty-one years so far). In that time, I “collected credentials” in hypnotherapy, yoga, meditation, and, by golly, I’m even a Minister of metaphysics. But the most important thing I learned is also the simplest way–just by noticing what’s going on around you. We do, in fact, attract whatever we are (think, believe, do).
