The Road Less Traveled By (The Inner Journey)

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
– Robert Frost

To me, the road less traveled by is the road to the inner world and the inner life. This is a quiet road that is often filled with loneliness and isolation from the world. There is no fanfare or ceremonial send-off when we choose to embark on this journey. This is a tortuous road with many twists and turns ahead.

The ways of the world seem so tempting and desirable. The world teaches us that we should seek fame, opulence, accolades, and positions of power. Attaining these worldly things makes us feel successful and gives us fleeting moments of happiness. Yet, this world is wrong in too many ways. The truth is, the world itself is illusionary and in this world, nothing gold can stay.

When we choose to give up our worldliness and seek the riches of the inner world, we are often despised and rejected by the world. Our otherworldliness and our indifference to the materialistic concerns of the world cause others to be afraid of us. Yet, as Jesus said, “if you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” (John 15:19 NIV)

While the inner world is important, the external world should not be neglected either. While we do not need to be in hermetic isolation from the world, we cannot lose ourselves to this world; while we can enjoy the things of this world, we cannot fall in love with this world for that is a form of idolatry. As Jesus said, “do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.” (1 John 2:15 NIV) In short, we can be in the world but not of it.

With faith, we continue walking on the road less traveled by, however lonely and arduous the journey may be. While outwardly we may seem to perish and decay, inwardly we are renewed and transformed each step of the way.

  2. The road less travelled…truly lonely. I understand the calling, the rewards, but I’m not keen on being alone again.

  4. I have felt that loneliness of going on the road less travelled, more and more the past few years. It is my sole comfort that Jesus understands and that He sees the struggles.

  5. I always believed that road less traveled gives that inner peace but you got to walk that path to realize that both seem parallel world’s but lead to the same path eventually. It definitely resonates.

  6. Beautifully written. The word says that we are called to love the world though we are not of the world. We are called to go into the world and shine our light for others to see so that the love of Christ is shown and to help others come to repentance and surrender their lives to Christ.

  8. The road less traveled is, in my opinion, the better road to take. Unfortunately, those around us don’t always agree. Beautiful post, thank you!

  14. I love Robert Frost and I love the Lord Jesus Christ! Thank you for this thought provoking post. Reading scripture always calms me. When seeking happiness, instead seek truth. The only truth is that which is from above, our Heavenly Father. He gave us the Word to live by. He gave us His only Son, Jesus, whose life on earth was a testimony to all. Our time here is fleeting. Our true rewards (happiness) will come in our eternal life hereafter. God never promised us that following Him would lead to a happy life on earth. But living by His word, in obedience, is the only way to peace and meaning and everlasting love ❤️

  15. […] I do this regularly. I find little things – a comment about a T.S. Eliot poem on a blog and one about inner journeys. […]

  16. This post sums my life journey. I once asked my Buddhist teacher, “How do I live in the world without frustration when I choose a path so different from all around me?”
She said, “Never doubt your power of setting a good example.”
